We have been learning about spiders and bats this week. We learned about what bats and spiders eat and where they make their homes. We also learned about how they are helpful to us...without bats and spiders there would be A LOT more mosquitoes, beetles and other insects around to bother us! At our art table this week we worked on spatial reasoning while assembling our bats on the moon. We painted a "surprise" spider web (wax resist fun!) and made fingerprint spiders to put in our webs. We also started our Halloween wreath that you can use to decorate your doors! During center time this week we let the kids think they were "just playing" while they really were working on some important skills! Our small finger muscles were put to work with picking up our spider rings, while visual perception and motor planning were used to stack them on the straws. Our bat number game helped reinforce number recognition and visual discrimination. Even if the children aren't quite at the point of understanding what the symbol "6" represents, it is helping to strengthen our visual discrimination skills to match the numerals together correctly instead of (for instance.) matching the 6 to the 9. We practiced our number sense with our clip a number bat game and our pumpkin play-dough mats. We are working on developing our one to one correspondence skills. Before a child understands one-to-one correspondence, he will count by rote memorization. When asked to count a small group of objects, he will likely count quickly through the numbers he has memorized and randomly touch the objects being counted instead of touching and counting each object just once. For example, a child given five beads may automatically count aloud from 1 to 10 when asked to count the beads, pointing to random beads as he proudly shows how well he can “count.” We spend a lot of time encouraging the children to "slow down" and "touch each item when you say the number"! Next week we will continue with our spooky Halloween activities: pumpkins, spiders, bats OH MY! Halloween Activities Information:
Tuesday, October 30th Halloween Party for Little Scout Families in our Large Motor Room hosted by the Sophomore and Freshman Student Council 4:00-5:00 PM There will be treats, games and lots of fun!! Come in costume or come as you are...just come join in the fun!! This is a really cute party that the high school students throw especially for us and the children of the teachers at LFHS! Wednesday, October 31st **Please send your child in his/her costume and make sure to send a change of clothes! We will be changing out of our costumes before we go outside to help preserve them for trick or treating! Please refrain from sending any play weapons (even if they are part of the costume). Our plan for the day: We will be having our special Halloween snack and then we will be going upstairs to "trick or treat" in the administration offices. After trick or treating we will come downstairs and play some Halloween games. Around 11:00 we will change out of our costumes and hopefully go run around outside.
